Despite the resorts teaming up back in 1999, these combined 200km of slopes still manage to retain an under-the-radar status.
A traditional Tyrolean bolthole to keep the clan entertained away from the slopes, with ventures like hiking the Panorama Enjoyment Trail and the adrenalin rush of Fisser Flieger – a hang glider-like ride above the Möseralm. Special experiences include First Tracks offered weekly to a limited number of people to take a 7:30am special lift to enjoy being the first to skim down the slopes and/or an exclusive mountain breakfast.
Snowcat Rides for a taste of the nightly piste preparation and a behind the scenes workshop on how cable cars work, a tour of the piste preparation machine workshop and a look at snow-making technology are also available.
The skiing
Fiss shares a 212km ski area with neighbouring villages Serfaus and Ladis. As well as good nursery slopes, the high snow-sure pistes such as the 10km Frommes red are absolutely perfect for intermediates, while experts can tackle runs like the Kamikaze and Zwölfer-Sportiv. There's a dedicated carving run, numerous terrain parks, two race courses and a skimovie run for a chance to capture and analyse your descent. Kids run riot in Berta's Kinderland ski park with its carousels and conveyor belts, and ‘feel-good’ rest stops dot the slopes for those more laid-back moments.
Facilities at Berta's Kinderland children's ski area include: a practice button lift, children's stage, heating room, playground, Kids Fun Park, snowmobiles, tubing run, racecourse, sound forest, music street, Sonnenburg Family Restaurant with Bertas Skitime TV and Bertas Alp (indoor playground) and last but not least, Kinderplanet restaurant for ski school children. There are over 25 mountain restaurants including many with access to non-skiers. Opt for a gourmet market style panoramic restaurant, ski lounge with waiter service and sun lounger terrace, or authentic chalet-style mountain huts with welcoming roaring fire, local ambience and Tyrolian delicacies. The Crystal Cube offers a unique experience for up to 8, set at a jaunty angle at 2,600m the exterior is made from mirrored glass, but from the inside a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic mountain view awaits to accompany Champagne breakfasts, luxury lunches and high teas.
